MATERIAL FOR THE SPINE is an exploration of the physical center of the self (head, spine, and pelvis). Begun in 1986, MFS was created by Steve Paxton in the years since he initiated Contact Improvisation (CI). It is elemental, meditative, and more technical than CI, emphasizing breathing and precise solo exercises. MFS is a powerful foundation for your own movement practice that will enrich your dancing.
After an intensive period in apprenticeship with Steve, I am offering a three-hour workshop to introduce the rarely-taught practices and present this work. This is an ideal workshop for dancers, non-dancers who are interested in movement, and for somatic practitioners.
MARGIT GALANTER is a dance artist, Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitionercm, and qigongpractitioner. Her fascination with the construction and value of movement has drawn her to embodied research for decades. Margit has an MA in Movement Research and Practice from NYU after years of collaboration and study with dance luminaries, and she has performed and taught extensively around the U.S. She co-curates and founded SEEDS Festival, an international arts and ecology experiment, and recently finished co-directing Earthdance, a dance retreat center in Western Massachusetts.
Margit’s practice, Physical Intelligence Life Art is based in Oakland.
